Abstract

From birth to 98 days old 10 Holstein and 10 each of 3/4 and 7/8 Holstein * zebu dairy calves were given, in addition to whole milk until weaning at 56 days old, Pennisetum purpureum and a starter feed (maximum 2 kg daily) based on maize and soyabean meal without or with maize germ meal (MGM) replacing 25, 50, 75 or 100% of the soyabean meal. There were no differences in intake of starter, weight gain, feed to gain ratio, liveweight or bone growth among treatments or genetic groups or interaction between the two. Best feed to gain ratio was in calves given no MGM. Best economic results were with MGM replacing 75% of soyabean meal.
