Description 
Perennial herb with a purple stem up to 3.5 m high and leaf blades that are dark green tinged with reddish-veins. Cultivated in the tropics for its tubers, which are used for human consumption when young.

The tubers and leaves are good fodder for cattle and pigs; it is grown for this purpose in Hawaii, where it is harvested 4-8 months after planting.
